Reading this book is almost like having a best friend who lovingly holds your hand and helps guide you out of a bad situation and into a healthy, happy you. A sort of, "I've been there before, and I know the way out. Let me show you the way. You can do this!" Different from other typical "diet" books, this one includes beautifully written prose- snippets into the author's life where you can see (and understand) where the weight became an issue for her and I suspect millions of others can relate to her experiences. There's a beautiful, vulnerability written within these pages which makes it all the more easier for the reader to address their own wounds and become "whole." The author said, enough! to the crazy-making calorie counting, dieting merry-go-round and the weight came off and now she is thin, healthy, and food is no longer an issue for her. I want to get there too and it's encouraging to know it's not too late. I can start where I'm at. I love that there's no calorie counting, no measuring, etc. I give this book 5 stars and I Highly Recommend it.
I think it is great that the writer found what works for her. If you read her article in People Magazine she mentions she does intuitive eating. In this book she does have a lot of judgment around foods. She even goes as far as to say that "you are eating too much." This is not what intuitive eating is. Her book is mostly mindful eating and not intuitive. Intuitive eating is about giving yourself permission to eat all foods that make your body feel good at what portion size makes you feel full. Intuitive eating is also bout getting more in touch with your hunger and fullness cues, and finding exercise that you enjoy. Also intuitive eating is not about weight loss. Some people gain, some lose, and some stay the same. With intuitive eating, the focus is never weight loss. If you are looking for a book on breaking your own diet culture cycle and mindset, I highly recommend Intuitive Eating by Evenlyn Tribole and Elyse Resch.
